Kristina Barta (MgA. Kristýna Urbánková Bárta) is a Czech jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader based in Prague. Her artistry stands among the most distinctive voices of contemporary European jazz. Her performances have been described as fiery, expressive, and eloquent, marked by exceptional intensity and emotional depth.
Kristina’s music is not a product of imitation or convention — it is the embodiment of pure truth. Every composition and every improvisation carries her most authentic emotions, thoughts, and personal perspectives. Her piano becomes a direct channel of sincerity: a space where inner worlds are transformed into sound, where music speaks more honestly than words ever could.
With international recognition as both a composer and performer, Kristina has captivated audiences worldwide through a unique blend of classical training and jazz innovation. Her concerts stand out for their lyrical strength, rhythmic freedom, and unmistakable artistic identity, appearing at prestigious festivals and venues such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, Jazzahead!, Bohemia Jazz Fest, and many others across Europe.
From Classical Roots to Jazz Innovation
Kristina began her musical journey as an oboist before transitioning to the piano — a change that shaped her artistic destiny. She had been listening to jazz music since childhood and had always loved it, often playing the piano in the mornings. Her early classical education provided a strong technical foundation, while her deep fascination with harmony, improvisation, and contemporary jazz language led her into a world of creative freedom.
She studied at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in Prague, focusing on both classical piano and jazz interpretation, and later continued at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (HAMU), where she earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Jazz Piano.
Her artistic development has also been enriched through international courses and workshops, including the Jazz Clinic in Velenje, Slovenia, in 2019 and 2020.
